- All containers must be adequately ventilated on three sides, with majority ventilation in the upper portion (§4.1.2).
- New CR20A container type required for hooded raptors and birds of prey (effective Oct 2025).
- CR19 update: maximum ventilation openings and density per bird; plywood approved as construction material.
- Poisonous/venomous animals must be double-packed and boldly marked "THIS ANIMAL BITES".
- Each container must display a Live Animal label without blocking ventilation openings.
- Container must not be accepted for travel if minimum IATA standards are not met.
- Subpart D covers nonhuman primate transport specifically — all primate shipments require APHIS documentation.
- Primary enclosures must prevent escape and protect the animal from injury during normal transport conditions.
- Food and water requirements: animals must be offered food and water within 4 hours before transport.
- Businesses conducting regulated activities must register with APHIS prior to any interstate transport.
- AWA regulates all warm-blooded animals intended for research, teaching, or testing (excluding specific rodents and birds).
- Terminal facilities must maintain temperature between 45°F and 85°F for regulated animals.
- All CITES-listed species must be packed and shipped per IATA LAR — non-compliance invalidates CITES permit.
- Management Authority of export country must confirm humane preparation and shipping before granting permits.
- Import permits require Scientific Authority confirmation that recipient is suitably equipped to house the animal.
- Article VIII: Parties must ensure all living specimens pass through formalities with minimum delay.
- Any specimen in CITES Appendix I, II, or III must be accompanied by a valid CITES document.
- CITES pre-requisite: permits may only be issued when applicant demonstrates humane shipping capability.
- Governs protection of animals during transport within EU member states and related operations.
- IATA LAR adopted as minimum standards for containers, pens, and stalls under EU framework.
- Enforced by Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General for research animals.
- Covers food safety, animal health, animal welfare, and plant health in transport context.
